Dear Microsoft!
So yeah I’m quitting Xbox Live.
Why?
Because you won’t allow me to pay for my continued membership.
It’s a damn shame though. I’ve been a gold member since February 2003, and it’s the only gaming service of it’s kind, I would ever consider paying for.
So what went wrong, you’d might ask.
I didn’t cheat or do something stupid, so I’m not banned as such.
My crime is this:
When Xbox Live was first released, I couldn’t wait for it to be officially “released” here in Denmark.
So I ordered a starter kit over the internet, and created an account with a fake UK adress. Actually all I needed was a real UK zip code.
And so the years went by, I paid and played. Upgraded to the 360 on the release and loved the new stuff you did.
I started chasing Achievements and building a Gamerscore, and along the way I changed my Visa card a couple of times. No problem.
But then you decided to lock my billing information - or rather you decided to lock the country I supposedly live in: United Kingdom, and then check if my credit card match my country, so when I got a new Visa last year, I had a problem.
Now I can’t pay for Xbox Live, and I can’t add my new credit card.
I have called Xbox Support, and they have told me to create a new Gamertag. Others have been told the same.
But I won’t. My Gamerscore is not enormous, but it still represents time and effort for me.
And I’m not some 14 year old kid, who just spelled Master Chief in a weird way and added some X’s to make a Gamertag. I thought a long time about mine. TriXie even did an interview with me about it .
But you’re telling me, I have to throw all that away, because the worlds biggest software company, can’t update an entry in a database?
I don’t believe that for a second.
I can see why you’d want to have some sort of control over what content is available to which regions. But I can’t understand why the commercial interest of your content providers, is more important to you, than your paying customers. Any Xbox Live subscriber who decides to move to another country, will be in the same predicament, that I am in.
To avoid abuse, why not just charge a fee to change your country?
I would pay. Maybe limit changes to once or twice a year.
And why even base region security on something so simple?
Why not look at IP adresses, or perhaps the unavoidable credit card?
Either way, I really hope you’ll allow me back online with my Xbox 360 at some point.
Kind regards
